Change is good most of the time. I said most of the time because changing for the sake of making a change doesn’t always work out the way you want. You need a reason – and added motivation to change – and a boost in inspiration is as powerful as motivations get.

Trying new things is a fantastic way to expand your horizons and be inspired. All you need is an open mind and you are ready for a whole new adventure. To help you start yours, here are some of the new things you can consider trying.

A Change of Ambience

A simple change of ambiance can bring thousands of new ideas. Here’s a tip I learned a few years ago: let your nose, your sense of smell, do most of the exploration. Smell is the most powerful trigger of memories and you never know where it can take you.

I once caught the aroma of fresh biscuits in a coffee shop. The strong coffee smell and that hint of fresh biscuits took me back to when sitting in a small coffee shop on my own was how I wrote at the time. The rest is history.

You too can find inspiration in the smells around you. Change the ambiance you are in, move location or take a temporary walk, and let your sense of smell do most of the work. Believe me when I say that the inspirations that come to mind will surprise you.

A New Adventure

Learning something new is another good thing to try, especially when you combine it with a huge adventure. Try a new sport or pick up skateboarding for a change. Getting started is easy now that you have sites like helping you every step of the way.

The process of mastering something new, especially when it is challenging, is an effective trigger of inspiration. As you fall down and get back up, the mind gets taken back to some of the best moments in life. As you overcome the challenges, a surge of hormones will make you feel incredible.

It is one big adventure after another; everything is an adventure. Learning hand lettering or joining a leather-making class can be just as exciting as trying skateboarding or joining the hiking community near where you live.

A Distraction

The most important purpose of trying new things, however, is being distracted. When you are so into something and you are very close to it, it is nearly impossible to see where you stand. You need that wider view to understand where you are, and the way to do that is by taking a step back and distracting yourself.

You don’t have to settle for an overly complicated activity either. Reading a new genre of book or going to see an old movie at the local boutique cinema can be just as fascinating. Remember, keep an open mind, be receptive to the experience you are about to have, and enjoy the adventure. The rest, the flood of inspiration, will come naturally.
